In Memoriam

On Monday, December 31, 2012, we lost a very dear and special member of the Winters Elementary School staff, our wonderful Attendance Secretary, Karen Hill. In memory of Karen, our PTA has dedicated and decorated the sick room at Waggoner to be a reminder of Karen's love and care for all.

About Us

TOGETHER, WE SUCCEED!

At Winters Elementary, our mission is to support all students to be critical thinkers and compassionate citizens.  We are committed to to the physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development of each child and to providing students with opportunities to succeed.

Beginning in Kindergarten, a rigorous curriculum exposes students to developmentally appropriate standards and prepares children to be readers, writers and mathematical problem solvers.  All students are offered a challenging educational program and provided with Structured English Immersion to accelerate their language acquisition, if needed.

In addition, students also participate in daily English Language Development to help foster academic literacy skills.  At both sites, students have the opportunity to actively explore scientific concepts during a weekly Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Lab.  Students also participate in weekly music education classes and workshops linked to state-level social studies and performing arts standards.

In the 2012 – 2013 school year, school-wide initiatives in writing and technology began preparing students for rigorous Common Core State Standards.  Teachers also focused on implementing the features of the Sheltered Instruction Observational Protocol (S.I.O.P.) Model to maximize instructional time and increase student engagement.  These initiatives in digital literacy and student language acquisition continue.

Beginning in the 2013 - 2014 school year, Winters Elementary began a program in Developmental Bilingual Education.  Primarily for English Learners, the program aims to development literacy in both English and Spanish.

All Winters Elementary students benefit from the many parents and community members that support our school.  There is an active PTA, School Site Council, English Learner Advisory Committee, and Migrant Parent Group.  Community volunteers help "Reach Out and Read" by serving as R.O.A.R Readers, listening to children read on a weekly basis, and high school students serve as Cross Age Tutors. Additionally, community members help the Winters Farm to School Program and Yolo Food Bank sponsor a weekly Kids Farmers Market.

We encourage you to visit and see the many great things that are happening!

We Celebrate Students!

We encourage students to demonstrate the Winters Elementary W.A.V.E. and to: Work hard; Always be kind; Value others; and Expect the best!  We teach lessons that showcase the importance of these traits and recognize students for their hard work and achievement.
